    Fourth of July Picnic

This Fourth of July picnic turned out to be a busy one, between grilling everything and being on call. At least I got to meet everyone, have dinner, and take some after-sunset pictures. From our vantage point, we counted at least fifteen different fireworks shows throughout the valley, from east beyond Redlands to west past Rancho Cucamonga. Then, I went off to do surgery.

The American Orthopaedic Association meeting takes place in Asheville. Between meetings, the Jobes and I visit the Biltmore estate grounds.

Over the weekend, I hike about forty miles within Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I first hike out to Charlie’s Bunion along the Appalachian Trail. One major day hike takes me along Palmer Creek Trail to Pretty Hollow Gap Trail and Mount Sterling Ridge Trail before dropping me back to Balsam Mountain Trail. On Sunday, at the Twentymile trailhead, I run into a large group of hikers, and we have a picnic lunch on Gregory Bald while doing the Long Hungry Ridge to Wolf Ridge loop trail. This morning, I drive through Cade’s Cove and visit some of the historic cabins.
