Haleakalā

This backpacking trip started by parking our car at the exit point, at the Halemau’u trailhead. It took forever to find someone to take us up the mountain to our starting point, but eventually, a car of girls picked us hitchhikers up.

The Sliding Sands trail was long, gentle, and beautiful. We started out along the dry stretch until reaching the Kapalaoa cabin. From there, we continue eastward until reaching the lush border by the Palikū cabin. We camp near the cabin and cook Indian food using alcohol stoves.

The highlights of the trip were seeing nēnē and silversword. The trail out took us around colorful cinder cones and sands.
